The veteran reporter has teamed with the start-up for revised versions of his classic pieces alongside new long-form journalism.
NeoText, the independent digital publisher behind Sorcerers and The Last Western, is partnering with Mike Sager, an award-winning journalist for Esquire and Rolling Stone, to release newly expanded and revised versions of his classic pieces alongside new long-form journalism, The Hollywood Reporter can reveal.
The first release as part of the partnership will be Shaman, the result of a year-long investigation into the life of Carlos Casteneda, the author turned spiritual figure who died in 1998, more than two decades after withdrawing from public view, with input from his wife, mistresses, adopted son, and followers. The book will feature a cover and spot illustrations from Australian design house WBYK.
NeoText co-founder John Schoenfelder said in a statement, “I first encountered Mike Sager’s work through his famed Rolling Stone piece ‘The Devil and John Holmes’ and immediately knew I was in the presence of a master reporter and storyteller. Since then I’ve read everything of his I can get my hands on, and I believe that Mike’s work is nothing short of a key link within the evolution of narrative journalism as a whole. He’s a relevant heir to masters of the field like Tom Wolfe, Hunter Thompson and Gay Talese, and it’s a supreme honor to work with him.”
“With the assets and expertise NeoText brings in the areas of books and film, I feel like I’ve been awarded a golden ticket,” Sager added. “It sounds kinda sappy, but their strengths are my weaknesses, and my strengths are what they seek. I’m not a person who believes in wishing, but if I was, I’d have wished for a place in this budding relationship. Can’t wait to see the developments of the projects we’ve already got upcoming.”
Shaman will be released digitally on Sept. 29 for $2.99.
