There are certain styles of Halloween costumes that never lose their popularity. Witches, ghosts, vampires, clowns – and an occasional thrift store hobo – are evergreen and can be found traipsing moonlit sidewalks and Halloween get-togethers every October 31.
However, Halloween is perhaps the most topical occasion in American pop culture, reflecting the most notable movies, celebrities and events of the preceding year.
Following the release of the horror film “It” in 2017 (the remake), Pennywise the Clown was that year’s most popular costume. A decade before that Austin Powers could be heard telling well-lubricated revelers to “behave” at nearly every Halloween party. And 1990 saw an unexpected run on orange down vests as costume wearers sought to mimic the exploits of Marty McFly.
Here, according to Good Housekeeping, are a few of the most popular trending Halloween costumes of 2020.
If you still lack a costume or need an accessory, most stores in Great Falls will continue selling Halloween accoutrements will into Saturday.
“There are a lot of people coming in who are just looking for the finishing touches – getting the make-up or getting an accessory that they want to add,” said Derrick Lerum, general manager of the Spirit Halloween costume store. “There is going to be a big drive in these last couple of days to grab the little things as well as full costumes.”
Spirit Halloween will remain open until 8 p.m. on Halloween night, followed by two days during which bargain hunters can browse for next year’s costume during the store’s half-off sale.
